CORK is expected to be in line for a major jobs boost later this week with the announcement of the opening of a new private hospital.
The Sheehan Medical Group – which runs the Blackrock Clinic – is expected to announce up to 500 jobs will be created with the development of the hospital at Citygate, Mahon.
It is to be built on the site of recently constructed showrooms and offices.
It’s understood that the 102-bed hospital will include a six-bed intensive care unit.
The hospital will be equipped with the latest technology including imaging, radiological and radiotherapy departments and it will have its own laboratory. It is expected it will also be equipped with four operating theatres and a recovery area.
The Sheehan Medical Group is likely to announce on Thursday that it will open the facility in April 2010.
Meanwhile, telemarketing company Zevas Communications has announced that it is to create 45 jobs at its call centre in Carrigaline. The jobs will be created after Zevas signed a new deal with UPC, the parent company of Chorus NTL to provide telesales and web sales services for its Irish operations.
The jobs will expand the company’s workforce to 135. Zevas Communications spokesman Con Lehane said the UPC deal was worth €2 million.
“We’re delighted to have the opportunity to work closely with one of Ireland’s leading telecommunications companies,” Mr Lehane said.
“As a result, we at Zevas can create local job opportunities for candidates who are looking to be part of a great team,” he said.
Tánaiste Mary Coughlan described it as a significant announcement in the current climate.
